What if the Hungarian Uprising encouraged other Eastern European Communist states to rebel at the same time as Hungary, ie if there was some type of organised action between occupied nations?

Would the Soviets be able to control these multiple uprisings?

Would these uprisings succeed? and if so what would be the consequences?

Would NATO be inclined to get involved?

Regards filers.

This one is rare enough to not let slip to the bottom. I cant speak to any of the questins with confidence, but there must be several who actually know something about this era & event.

To a degree it would depend on what other countries rebelled. Add Poland and have the rebellion be nation wide, may be. On the other hand if you consider East Germany then the soviets would land on them with both feet. A key factor would be what the respective militaries do. If they don't side with the rebels in large numbers the rebels get crushed. Re NATO, covert support is the best you can hope for

The West is willing to let them be crushed, so they will be.

It will have gigantic butterfly effects but the actual revolts have no chance of sucess.

The attention of the West was on what was going on in Egypt. Britain, France and Israel were dealing with the problem of Nasser. The French believed that Nasser was behind the trouble in Algeria. The President Eisenhower made the mistake of getting involved and demanding that the British and French stop thus causing a division. It was then that the Hungarian Revolution or Uprising took place. Still there was a reaction fortunately it was not strong enough. Yugoslavia was the one nation that began to mobilize. Austria wanted to do something but without help it could not. Of the Warsaw Pact nations Poland might have followed suit. East Germany would have demonstrations 6 years latter which were crushed by the East German Secret Police and Military.
