PC|WI: Domestication of American Species

Possible, but not necessary. Native Americans already had dogs, why would they need to tame coyotes?
Coyotes are better able to survive in the more arid regions. They can actively hunt smaller game, not just for themselves, but also their master. They can assist with larger game. And capable of providing protection.

Points 1 and 2 are the reasons I see it becoming possible in Comancheria. Though dogs do provide more readily for the latter points. Also, they could fill a possible niche similar to what a domesticated fox could serve.

In more modern terms (something I plan on doing once I retire) would be just because.

They could domesticate fish like the chinese did, or a lizard species, I know the Common Chuckwalla and Iguanas are plant-eating, I think perhaps with a POD about 75,000 years ago with the black bear growing cellulose-digesting bacteria in their digestive system you could have them slowly lose some of their edge, moving towards an entirely herbivorous lifestyle. Megafauna would work as well, don't just considered living species. Or you could have fauna from the old world come over with the first humans.

The handicap for domesticating the Green Iguana is that they take about three years to mature. On the other hand, they're prolific egg layers, up to 85 a year, do very well in density, and have an extremely high survival rate when humans are helping out. All you really need is for a faster growing Green Iguana that reaches maturity in a year, and you've got a domesticable.
