PC: U.S. break-away states?

So apart from the obvious one, what other countries could be formed out of a failed U.S.?

Any time between 1789 and 2017 will do.

Reconstituted Kingdom of Hawaii.

Navajo--Hopi land.

Theocracy of Deseret

New England Republic

Texas

Greater California

Washington-Oregon-British Columbia-Alaska-dom

Rustbeltia

City State of New York

A second Republic of Vermont, maybe after some Brits trailblaze through it in an alt-1812, and the Vermonters blame it on the south. I think a breakaway state is most plausible before the civil war, when Americans regarded the states as nearly separate entities as opposed to a united nation; hence the difference between "these United States" and "the United States".

By "state" in the OP title, I am referring to a new country formed out of former U.S. territory, and not necessarily a U.S. state that has broken away.

(I'm also a "...the United States are..." kind of person, but that's mostly because "are" sounds better than "is" IMO)

Oh yeah. Well aside the ones Kerney mentioned, you could have the Carolinas secede in a failed Article of Confederation, keeping their western claims perhaps to the Mississippi. Same for Virginia. A Great Lakes Federation, maybe joining with Canada. I've always liked the idea of a big ol' Utah/Deseret composed of the Mormon parts of Utah, Idaho and Wyoming.
