PC: Phonecian colony in Britain

What is the likelihood that the Phonecians or any of their successors could have established a city-state in Britain? How big could this city get? Could it control large parts of Britain? Where would it be located?

I would assume that they would need to build at least one in Gaul, then up into Brittany and Cornwall. As the natives aren't very friendly, I bet they would stop there.

The tin mines that would have been the objective of any such colonizing expedition were in Cornwall, IIRC.

Honestly that would probably need the Romans to be gone or weak, give the Carthaginians a couple centuries and they'll get there.

I suppose that such a colony's reach would be about that for any other Carthaginian colony. And it would make the Roman conquest sooner and easier. Besides which such a colony might well be a way station to the more lucrative silver mines of what we now call Kongsberg in Telemark in what we call Norway IOTL assuming that there was any ancient working of that area which there might or might not be.

Phoenicians from Canaan probably no.
Carthaginians, maybe.
It would be probably little more than a trading post in Cornwall, though, or perhaps in the Scilly Isles.
Very interesting cultural effects I think, quite limited direct political impact.
Though the place might swell to some degree attracting other Carthaginians is the Punic Wars go like OTL (I don't see any reason for them not to).

There might be some introduction of Punic culture into Britannia, that could make things interesting in the future.

Nothing really major I guess, though accumulating differences would make the world unrecognizable anyway by 2013.
