PC:No British occupation of Egypt

Anyway Khedivate of Egypt could remain independent of British occupation/influence and that of any other European powers

Would be the impact of Egypt remaining independent of European powers

Cutting Khedive Ismail's insane levels of spending would be a good start. He was an energetic ruler, but the expenses simply weren't sustainable. Debt was the foot in the door for European influence, especially in Egypt. A more austere ruler (maybe this guy?) would have a better shot at prolonging Egyptian independence, though it must be said Ismail did a decent job promoting himself as an equal to the European powers. But a healthy account balance probably wouldn't be enough. Egypt has the canal (or the possibility for one) so it can't just keep its head down and hope the Europeans leave them alone. Without a delicate balancing act between the great powers (something Ismail ultimately failed to achieve) Egypt will find itself subjugated at the first opportunity. All it takes is one importune riot and the British or French will park gunboats outside Alexandria. So the Khedive needs to keep the peace at home while convincing the other Europeans that Egypt would be the most impartial steward of the canal (and that an impartial steward is the best option for them). This over multiple rulers and through whatever conflicts arise between the Europeans (and the Turks). So it wouldn't be easy, but with the right policies (no I don't really know what those policies are) it should be possible.

If Abdulhamid II intervened as the British asked against the Mahdist. No guarantee if Egypt will remain independent but the Ottomans have a bit difficult time to bring Egypt under their control than the British as to acquire Egyptian Debt was seen as the biggest obstacle to intervene.
