The Manhattan Project is notoriously well known for how easy it was for Soviet agents to infiltrate and monitor. What I'm interested in is the remote possibility of the project's directors stepping up security to a point that Soviet espionage is mostly hindered or otherwise compromised. While we're at it, what sorts of effects would result from better security? I recall reading somewhere that the Soviet atomic weapons program was initially hindered by Stalin's insistence that they basically replicate what the Manhattan Project's researchers had come up with instead of relying on more innovative and efficient designs produced independently by Soviet researchers.
