Look back at the "ineptitude" of French King Louis XVI during the final few months of his reign.

( Not calling up a mercenary group to disperse the Paris revolt; Not leaving the country; etc.)

It seems me that these missteps and others could potentially be a small window into the true intentions of last absolute monarch of France.
I have more arguements to why this is plausible, but before fleshing them all out, what do you think?

Based on your knowledge of Louis XVI and the decisions he took during his reign, is it plausible he might have been a Republican in secret?

Implausible. He believed he was God's man on Earth, why would he want a republic?

bAllSBks - that's Russian for .......
He was not a Monarchist - He was THE MONARCH.
Can't get much further away from republicanism than that!
I personally believe that his confused state was due to facing problems NO monarch had faced up till then. (Maybe Charles I of England)
He had ultimate control of his country and at the same time; no control.
How could he deal with situations that would run beyond what anyone, at the time, expected?
Mob Rule is NOT a planned outcome!

As everyone has said... that's just a big 'no'.

(Although I must say I like the idea of an actual monarch wanting to abolish the monarchy, but being unable to - for instance because the aristocracy would just have him declared insane and install a new monarch - so instead he starts cleverly orchestrating a revolution... against himself. This would be very fun to see played out in an ATL or any kind of story, really... but Louis XVI is not the guy for it!)

Yeah, I suppose Louis XVI secretly was a Republican.

The real question, though, is, "was Napoleon a Democrat?"

I would certainly say so - all the conservative powers of Europe banded together to fight him.
