So after Chancellorsville, Lee reorganizes the ANV from having two corps under Longstreet and Jackson to three under Longstreet, Hill, and Ewell. While the new organization was more flexible, Hill and Ewell seem to have found the transition to the semi-independence of corps command difficult; Lee gave their previous corps commander broad objectives, who then gave them detailed orders.

Sort of a two fold question here. 1) Would Lee have still reorganized the army if Jackson had not been wounded, and 2) Between Hill, Ewell, and Early, (and any other options, I suppose) who would have been best to fill that new slot?

Early comes to mind since he had some experience with semi-independent command at Chancellorsville, and would later show some skill fighting long odds in the Valley Campaign, but he's certainly not perfect. Hill of course had his recurring illness, which stroke at inopportune times, and Ewell's injuries could hinder him at times.
