PC:KMT collapse in the middle of WW2; Partition of China into Soviet and American backed states

Say for whatever reason the KMT disintegrates between 1942 and 1944.

Could this open the door for a Korea style division of China between the United States and the Soviet Union

Define "disintegrate". Does the KMT blip out of existence, are they beaten by the Japanese? The Communists? Russia??

I think the likeliest scenario (assuming they just blip out of existence and there's a big power vacuum) is the CPC takes over. Communism, albeit in a million different forms, was very popular among the peasantry because of land reform promises and the KMT's infamy from dealing with western capital. The soviets can't realistically just annex large parts of China, plus they're still backing the CPC. I also believe the KMT holding on in south china to be the best bet for an american-backed china. There's no way the US lands a boatload of troops, in the middle of their busy campaign against Japan, to restore order in China or to fight of the CPC who at this point aren't anti-American yet.

I have to agree with the poster above me - a KMT/GMD collapse during WW2 means a Communist China full-stop, with no American-backed state in the South. This will mean, though, that contrary to China's expectations Taiwan may be treated differently from OTL as part of Japan's territory which may or may not be detachable and in the latter either with a separate US-backed government (in which case the US also has Okinawa) or a UN Trust Territory. That still does not make it a "South China" per sé like what the OP wants, but that's OK unless you're the CCP.
