The answer is simple: get the Dassault Mercure 200 powered by two CFM International CFM56 engines into production. By 1980, the first prototypes are flying, and by 1985 the Mercure 200 is in service with Air France, Air Inter, Sabena, KLM, Iberia, TAP, Alitalia and even Lufthansa as Europe's primary single-aisle jet. With the Mercure 200 in production, even British Airways will buy them to replace the aging BAe Tridents.
