PC: Dominion of India after 1950?

Just doing a bit of background reading for a planned timeline and I just want to check the plausibility of something. With a PoD no earlier than 1945 would it be possible for India to decide to remain a Dominion of the British Empire for a little while longer rather than become a republic in 1950, especially if those in charge felt that the political situation was becoming increasingly unstable and/or there was a practical need to establish closer ties with the West?

If china was alot scarier somehow?and maybe only as a tool to keep the muslim parts as parts of india i guess could be a option?

Brits really abused the burgeoning political class to much to make post 45 dominionship stick .

Nope, not gonna happen.

The INC has the golden chance they fought for, i doubt they'll just say "nah, we're fine and dandy the way it is so let's keep the queen on our currency, cheerio".

With a 1940 POD it's just about possible, barely (and probably not for very much longer - you've got to have them kept distracted doing other things and not get around to it). With a 1945 POD it's hopeless. To have it plausible you need at least a 1918 POD and probably pre-1900.

If the will and the foresight was there then the end of ww1 would be fine as a pod . The british had moronic reactions to the end of the war especially in the political class.

I do agree that 1945 pod is too late.

Hell not declaring war for india without consulting the indian leaders was a massive bone for the congress party , avoiding that would be massive enough and would make a fine pod for example.

They were strangely pro war considering their later history .They just wanted to be involved in decision making and i guess they thought that raising troops will get some industry and trained troops at the end of the war.

Hmm...

Maybe. If Gandhi makes the decision.
Anything within reason is possible if Gandhi makes the decision.
The question is why would he make such a decision?

It would have been easy for the republic to have been delayed for a few years, simply have the constitutional negotiations get derailed.

Additionally, India wanted to remain within the Commonwealth - and my understanding is that the London Declaration and the consequent allowance of republics within the membership was sped up by Ireland's becoming a republic in 1948. So if Da Valera had won the election instead the monarchy would have survived in southern Ireland (for a few more years at least) and a London Declaration analogue could have been delayed.

In 1948 the Indians had some proposal regarding the King as a 'First Citizen' that was eventually dropped after facing some objections from other Commonwealth states - I don't know what that concept entailed though.

:D

This is perfect for what I have planned. Yet another spanner to throw in the workings of the post-independence Indian government.

Happy to help - I look forward to your TL.

Which divergence will you opt for (not that they are mutually exclusive).

Probably going to go for the constitutional negotiations getting stalled. It fits well with some of the other stuff I have planned for the late 40s. Like I said its not a major part of my TL, just one of the many little things that I have planned to undermine the credibility of the INC during the first decade of independence.
