PC: Dom Afonso Lives

In 1847, the two year old son and heir of Dom Pedro II of Brazil, Afonso suddenly died of convulsions while playing in his father's library. My question is what caused these convulsions? My independent search to find out more in depth information has been inconclusive. More important is was Afonso's death inevitable? Could he have survived these convulsions and lived a long and healthy life, and perhaps succeeded his father as Emperor?

I don't think people know exactly what caused the convulsions, so it's hard to say whether he would live to see adulthood.

As Guilherme Loureiro says since we have very limited knowledge there's no way to say one way or the other. The easiest solution to it is to simply have a slightly different sperm fertilise the egg if it was an inherited condition, for him to not get sick if it was something he caught that caused them or if it was something like a bump to the head then for him to not have the accident. Now granted there's a bit of handwavium since you can't say specifically what you're avoiding but I wouldn't really worry about it.

Yeah, from the looks of things the death of the prince could have been caused by different factors. I try try reserved when it comes to handwavium, though I think with this particular issue we can get down to business and have Afonso survive. I think this is a really interesting area to explore, Brazilian history can possibly deviate and all sorts of different directions with a possible future Emperor Afonso I.
