PC: Dissolution of Sweden-Norway 1905 leads to war

Could the dissolution crisis realistically turned into a war between Sweden and Norway? And if so how would it have played out?

How far would Germany and Britain be willing to intervene in the issue?

I did it in my TL. Basically I have Germany being more involved in Sweden and push for war. However the war is short and then over winter they hammer out a truce.

Easily. Just let a Norwegian anarchist murder the Swedish king, and the war is a fact.

Foreign intervention - unclear. What would be their goal?

A little ASB :

- the Germans pushed Norway to have revendifications on more swedish territories, so swedish and norway troops fought some borders battles,

- then Germany sent an insulting ultimatum to Sweden and are ready so send support to Norway in case of refusal,

- Sweden accept nearly all germans demands but Germany press the issue and attacked Sweden,

- Sweden is rapidly defeated and Germans obtained bases in Norway for the Hochseeflotte and low prices on sweden iron,

Next time, Sweden will be on Entente side because Germany "diplomacy" pissed one more country...

How about Germany sending Sweden a communication to the effect that Germany gives Sweden a full guarantee of support against Norway and promises arms and funding if they take action to prevent Norway from falling within the British sphere? How ASB would it be for A the Germans to care enough or B the Swedish King to actually have the spine to fight?

I don't think Sweden need anybody support to fight a war against Norway in 1905.

German intervention will be seen as :

A school bully (Sweden) is hitting a younger child (Norway).

Then came a mafia hitman (Germany) and propose his help to hit the young child.

The school bully reply "No thank you, Sir" while breaking the nose and the teeth of the smaller on a brick wall...

I suppose that, if you really wanted a war, you could also try something like having Norwegian hyper-nationalists decide that independence is not enough, they also need to reclaim lost Norwegian territory like Jamtland, Harjedaln and Bohuslan. Sure, Norway lost all those areas centuries ago, but we are talking about early-20th century hyper-nationalism; logic and reason would not apply.

Very ASB since Norway was probably the most pro- British society outside Britain´.

One other point. If Wiki is to be believed, King Oscar II had made his mind up to let Norway "go in peace" rather than fight to maintain the Union, and playedan important role in the negotiations leading up to the separation.

Does anyone know what the Crown Prince (who became King Gustav V two years later) thought about it all? Might he have been more pugnacious had he been on the throne?

Presumably, if it does come to a fight the Germans favour the Swedish side, viewing the Norwegians as "rebels". If Sweden's action estranges her from other European powers she may be even more pro-German when WW1 breaks out. Could the Sweden-Norway Union join the CPs?

Why is it assumed Germany would fight on Swedish side? Certainly William II had lots of personal sympathies for Norway...

Would not the socialists in Norway and Sweden dislike a war between them? You know war between the brethrens for the conservative elites power etc etc. It's hard to whip up a nationalistic frenzy over Norway splitting from the union among the laborers and farm hands. Less competition for work and the idea to fight a war against a brother people because some rich people says so is good motivation to be against war

The thing is that the majority of Sweden wouldnt have followed orders since noone that was to do the actuall fighting wanted war
