Trying to find a best of both worlds compromise between what the Catholic Church and the Teutonic Order wanted and what Albert in OTL did...
Could he have privately converted to Protestantism but saved face with the Catholic Church?
Could he have made himself Duke and serve his uncle in Poland while remaining Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights, able to marry and produce heirs (maybe he could convince his knights to support his decision and convince the Church by talking out of the side of his mouth to allow the Grand Master special dynastic privileges) turning the Order into a powerful high council, war arm of the government, and Catholic authority in an otherwise biconfessional state?
Is it possible for the Teutonic Order to become biconfessional (not secular) and still answer in some significant way to the Catholics? How would such an Order function as an active legislative war council? I'm imagining a cross between the janissaries, the Jedi council, the Swiss guard, and the Small Council from GoT... Close?
Also, I've read on some older threads that Albert might have had a chance at Poland. In this scenario, I'd like to find a way for him to get it.
Ultimately, the goal is for at least a Teutonic Duchy of Prussia to exist as a biconfessional state in which the Teutonic Order is second only to the Grand Ducal Master in power.
At best a nominally Teutonic Duchy of Prussia-Poland-Brandenburg-Lithuania.
So any ideas? Can Albert have his cake and eat it too?
