hey, all. this thought occurred to me the other day. suppose that, in a given ATL, the United States gets alot more territory to carve states out of, not just straight to the ocean but also north into Canada and across the sea to Pacific islands, maybe even south into Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America. it doesn't matter for the discussion how they got this territory, they just have it. theoretically, could the continued ratification of free states and slave states to maintain the "balance" of power between the two sides have delayed the Civil War? (quotation marks because it was only "balanced" to skew it in the slavers' favor) there's no doubt in my mind that it would eventually occur, but could it have been delayed?
