Inspired by HMS Queen Elizabeth's thread about building 3 CVA's instead of 3 Invincible's so here goes.
Let's for the sake of argument, somehow the RN is able to invest in a squadron of SeaKing AEW's for service aboard their upcoming Invincible's, in the late '70's for service in the 1980's.
As a consequence, FAA SHAR's have a field day against Argentine air attacks and sink both the Belgrano and the carrier 25th of May thus proving the concept of the Sea Control ship/ VSTOL carrier.
Although the SCS idea was scrapped in the mid 70's due to budget cuts what if, due to the performance of Invincible and Hermes in the alternate Falklands conflict it was resurrected by the US Navy and Reagan administration instead of building more Nimitz class ships.
I'm thinking of a VSS class III version with a total complement of 1,600 and a total of 52 aircraft, 36 SHAR's, 12 ASW Helicopters and 3/4 AEW helicopters.
Not only that, replace every US CVA with 3 VSTOL carriers.
Would this be possible?
Would this work?
Regards filers.
