PC:Better RN carrier performance in '82 leads to resurrection of Sea Control Ship.

That sort of defeat the purpose of SCS. Taking into account mechanical problems, pilot availabiliy and luck, 3 Harriers are just too few and there is a chance that none of the Harriers are available for mission when it is critical.

In such case, there is no reason to develop SCS, just stick with DDH like the RACN or the JMSDF if one want ASW helicopters and command capacity. Do not forget SCS has a larger crew requirement and that cost money.
All good points but my understanding was that the SCS concept called for carrying 3 harriers.

I'm also thinking carrying more helicopters on the (perhaps different than historical) underway replenishment ships was another option.

Considering the time period when the SCS was being designed, the USN didn't envision these ships operating independently. They were envisioned primarily operating in concert with Attack Carriers in a large task force. Like the Essex class they were replacing, their fighter complement was more of an after thought to provide some fighter cover in the event the CVA was conducting something like an Alpha Strike.

Oh I'm not. I'm looking at it as, even a compromised AEW is better than no AEW.

Here's an idea regarding a AEW platform.

Have the SeaKing AEW operate as an interim fix . . . . until a EV-22 Osprey AEW becomes operational in the '00's

I've read that the RN are looking for a version of this to fly off their QE class carriers

Would that work?

Regards filers.
