Here is my question today. In a version of history where the US had stricter campaign finance laws (say with a no-Watergate or similar POD), is it probable that the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and Great Recession might still happen around the same year(s) as OTL, perhaps still under a Democrat like Bill Clinton?
My thinking is that deregulation of the banks would still occur even if the campaign finance laws put in place before 1974 were still in place. As someone from the US it's hard to imagine the Democrats not going neoliberal after the Reagan Revolution takes off, leading Clinton & co. to still consider bank deregulation especially with a GOP-controlled Congress.
