Based on the information here, it looks like almost all Francophone Countries in Africa are members of one of two currency unions:

Thus, what I am curious is this--was it plausible/realistic for a political union (or two political unions) made up of most or all of the Francophone countries in Africa to develop after these countries acquired their independence from France?
Any thoughts on this?
