pavane pour une infanta defunte

If one considers how reasonably high her half-sister, Margarita of Austria, Governess of the Netherlands flew, what might've happened to the "Infanta Isabel", bastard daughter of HRE Karl V and his stepgrandmother, Germaine de Foix?

OTL she married a nobleman, but surely with royalty on both sides she might marry better?

Ah. Margaret was a bastard, too.

Still. Isabel is not only a bastard, but an incestuous one. That will limit possibilities significantly.

Incestuous bastard's a bit strong dont you think? Yes, by the degrees of the Church, Germaine was the equivalent of Karl's biological grandmother - since AFAIK the church didnt distinguish between 'in sanguine' and 'in maritali'. However, surely with the papacy serving as the 'king of Spain's chaplain' a dispensation legitimizing Isabel is possible?

Anyone with knowledge of 16th century canon law feel free to comment.

Germaine De Foix is also a cousin of Karl V...the marriage between Ferdinand and Germaine De Foix was incestious as well because Germaine De Foix is the GrandNiece of Ferdinand of Aragon.

Iberian royalty did incest all the time. Though, I don't think Charles ever admitted or even gave out that Isabel was his child, so we're not sure if that's true.

True, very true. But that was MARRIAGES with papal dispensation, not an extra marital affair.

I really cant imagine the pope granting a dispensation for an affair! Now, legitimizing the child later, THAT might be theoretically possible. Not sure.

Was Isabel ever even recognized by either parent? I mean I've read about the affair and the girls birth, but after that she vanishes from the historical record. And would recognizing her help Charles in any way? Or would it be more likely to harm him, having an affair with his step-grandmother (and doesn't THAT sound odd)?

Germaine is both his Step-Grandmother and Cousin...:D

They could have the marriage of Ferdinand of Aragon and Germaine annulled posthumously since it was incestious.

That didn't answer my question. Was Isabel ever recognized as Charles' and Germaine's daughter? And why would Charles have Germaine de Foix's marriage posthumously annulled? He's not gonna marry her so there would be no point.

In several documents, Germaine refers to Isabel as 'infanta' a title she would've had no right to unless she was the legitimate or naturalized daughter of the king. So there might be something there.
