Paul McCartney joins ELO

Exactly what it says on the tin. Paul joins the Electric Light Orchestra in 1972 right after the breakup of the Beatles and the departure of Roy Wood from ELO.

Any thoughts?

Not sure the ELO style fits in with Paul's then ideals but it'd be interesting how more musical talent would effect them.

What are the probability for me to be listening to ELO while looking at ah.com and spotting this thread?

Regarding McCartney it would be a shame! I just dont like much of his music, not even Beatles...

ELO would not be ELO :(

Btw, I was listening to "Four little diamonds" :)

I think Mr Blue Sky and Evil Woman are my favourites

Jeff Lynne was more comfortable inside a recording studio than on a concert stage. For McCartney joining ELO to work, Lynne would have to share songwriting and production. Also, Lynne may be willing to stay in the studio while McCartney leads the band on tour.

If McCartney does join ELO, Kelly Groucutt would have to leave the band.

I can easily envision McCartney instead of Groucutt on the recording of Don't Bring Me Down.

Going into the 1980s, would McCartney want to stick around with ELO or kick off his solo recording career?

I doubt McCartney would have joined ELO, he'd already really started off Wings in all but name with Ram in 1971.

I was watching on BBC4 late last night a programme about British Musicals since the 1960s, and something I found very interesting was that Tim Rice, now famous as Andrew Lloyd Webber's lyricist partner wanted to partner with another composer in the 1970s, one of which he mentioned, and that was Paul McCartney who declined.

The musical Rice was working on, was one of the life of Eva Peron - Evita, what would the consequences be for music in general if McCartney agreed to this?

My fiancee-

I can't see McCartney going that far left of his rock roots. Besides, he was used to be a strongly featured singer, and that wasn't as prevalent in ELO. Nor were guitar leads.

As far as McCartney writing a musical... I don't think so. He's quite the singer, and he can put out some amazing lyrics and melodies, but again, those tend to stay in his soft rock/ rock n roll tracks. I'm sure he would have been good at writing other music styles, but I just don't see him attempting it. If he HAD, I think we would view him more as an Elton John type musician, because that's exactly what he did. Elton had a ton of records, but then he broke off into musicals. He was more flashy from the start, though. As far as how the musical would differ... Webber is known for catchy tunes. So is McCartney. I'm sure they would have been different, but I don't think it would have been an enormous change in the basic tone.
