Pat Buchanan in 1996

Suppose that Pat Buchanan wins the Republican nomination in 1996, would this lead to a even bigger landslide for Clinton? Would this have any effect on the Republican Party if a loon such as Buchanan lost in a landslide? Could Democrats win back the House?

Buchanan 1996? :eek: well the GOP would have to force a super liberal on him as a running mate.... John R. McKernan, Christine Todd Whitman, or Colin Powell (the first ones to come to mind) but given the way Buchanan is he'd pick some one as crazy as he is and say fuck it, so... Oliver North, Jack Kemp, Bob Dornan :eek: in which case the GOP will split wide open, all market Republicans will run to Perot, who may pick up some states, think the election of 1912 Perot=TR Buchanan=Taft Clinton=WW

Buchanan win Presidency? WHAT?!?!!??!!?!?:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

DO NOT WANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't worry; it's not as bad as it could have been. Buchanan's a pundit with some minor functionary political experience. To change anything in America, either you need public opinion and the tide of history on your side (as with Reagan), or you need to be an extraordinary legislator (Johnson). Otherwise, the institutions will block reform.

Buchanan tries to 'crash or crash through', bombarding Congress with a blizzard of initiatives. If he understood the Senate, which really is more like a gentlemen's club than a modern legislator, or if he'd been a Governor, and hence understood the role of compromise and give-and-take, he could have been a very scary President. As it is, in my TL he essentially blusters his way into power and blusters his way out.
