Passing Time: An Alternate MLB Post-Season TL

OK, so I'm going to give writing a timeline an initial shot. This particular timeline features alternate post-seasons of Major League Baseball. Our POD is 1994; in this world, there is no MLB strike in that year, and the playoffs are held as scheduled.

Differences:
  • In each league, the three divisional champions qualify for the post-season, along with the top two non-divisional champ teams. The teams are then seeded based on record.
  • The playoff format is as follows: winner-take-all wild card game, best of five LDS, best of seven LCS, best of seven World Series.
  • In this timeline, Milwaukee is in the AL Central, and Houston the NL West.
  • Home field advantage in the World Series goes to the team with the better regular season record.
  • For the purposes of this world, the Montreal Expos never move to Washington.
Anyways....I think I'm about ready to kick this thing off! :)

With the 1994 MLB Regular Season in the books, the playoffs are getting underway. The New York Yankees have cruised to the AL East title, and posted a record of 100-62. In the National League, the Montreal Expos have completed perhaps their best regular season ever, winning 105 games in the process. This is good enough to capture the NL East division crown.

Other divisional champions:
  • AL Central: Chicago White Sox (96-66)
  • AL West: Texas Rangers (90-72)
  • NL Central: Cincinnati Reds (94-68)
  • NL West: Houston Astros (93-69)
The nail-biting, winner-take-all Wild Card Games are set to begin.

The 1994 playoffs kick off with the two Wild Card Games. In the AL, the Cleveland Indians (95-67) will play host to the Kansas City Royals (90-72). Projected starters are Charles Nagy for the Tribe, and David Cone for the Royals.

Meanwhile, the NL Wild Card Game features the Atlanta Braves (97-65) entertaining the Los Angeles Dodgers (83-79). Greg Maddox will get the ball for the Braves, and the Dodgers will start Kevin Gross.

Results:

Cleveland Indians 5, Kansas City Royals 4

In a heartbreaker for Kansas City, closer Jeff Montgomery gives up back-to-back home runs to Jim Thome and Albert Belle, respectively. Belle's solo shot wins the game for Cleveland, who now advances to meet the Yankees. Jose Mesa gets the win for the Indians, while Montgomery is the loser.

Atlanta Braves 5, Los Angeles Dodgers 4

At Fulton County Stadium, Roberto Kelly goes three for five with a RBI, as the Braves defeat the Dodgers. Atlanta now moves on to face the Expos. Mike Stanton is credited with the victory, and Greg McMichael collects a save. Todd Worrell takes the loss for Los Angeles.

Next up: the LDS!

Doing this part a little differently. Rather than post game highlights, I will simply post the scores and pitching particulars. Let's do this thing!

ALDS: New York Yankees v Cleveland Indians

Can the powerful "Bronx Bombers" knock off the Tribe?

Game 1 (at Cleveland): Indians 1, Yankees 5 (W: S. Kamieniecki) (L: D. Martinez)

Game 2 (at Yankee Stadium): Yankees 3, Indians 0 (W: J. Key) (L: C. Nagy) (CG: Key) (SH: Key)

Game 3 (at Yankee Stadium): Yankees 8, Indians 7 (W: B. Wickman) (L: J. Mesa) (SV: S. Howe)

The Yankees have swept away the Indians in just three games, and will now advance to the best of seven ALCS.

ALDS: Chicago White Sox v Texas Rangers

Will Chicago meet New York in the ALCS, or will the Rangers deal out justice, Texas style?

Game 1 (at Arlington Stadium, Arlington TX): Rangers 9, White Sox 3 (W: K. Rogers) (L: J. McDowell) (CG: Rogers)

Game 2 (at Comiskey Park): White Sox 3, Rangers 5 (W: J. Dettmer) (L: W. Alvarez) (SV: T. Henke)

Game 3 (at Comiskey Park): White Sox 8, Rangers 6 (W: McDowell) (L: D. Oliver) (SV: R. Hernandez)

Game 4 (Arlington Stadium, Arlington TX): Rangers 5, White Sox 9 (W: J. Bere) (L: K. Brown)

Game 5 (at Comiskey Park): White Sox 6, Rangers 0 (W: Alvarez) (L: Dettmer) (CG: Alvarez) (SH: Alvarez)

The Sox are victorious, taking down Texas in five games!

Coming up: The NLDS.

As promised....

NLDS: Montreal Expos v Atlanta Braves

"O Canada"! After years of just missing the playoffs, will the Expos be able to advance to the NLCS?

Game 1 (at Fulton County Stadium): Braves 2, Expos 3 (W: J. Fassero) (L: K. Mercker) (SV: J. Wetteland)

Game 2 (at Olympic Stadium): Expos 1, Braves 4 (W: G. Maddux) (L: B. Henry) (SV: G. McMichael)

Game 3 (at Olympic Stadium): Expos 7, Braves 1 (W: Fassero) (L: T. Glavine)

Game 4 (at Fulton County Stadium): Braves 6, Expos 5 (W: M. Bielecki) (L: J. Shaw) (SV: McMichael) (BSV: Bielecki, Shaw)

Game 5 (at Olympic Stadium): Expos 2, Braves 4 (W: Maddux) (L: Henry) (SV: McMichael)

In a thrilling five game series, the Expos come up just short yet again.
"Missed it by THAT much!" -- "Get Smart"

NLDS: Cincinnati Reds v Houston Astros

"Houston, we have a problem"! Can the 'Stros advance to their first NLCS since 1986, or will the "Big Red Machine" strike again?

Game 1 (at The Astrodome): Astros 2, Reds 0 (W: G. Swindell) (L: J. Smiley) (SV: J. Hudek)

Game 2 (at Riverfront Stadium): Reds 6, Astros 5 (W: J. Brantley) (L: Hudek) (BSV: Brantley, Hudek)

Game 3 (at Riverfront Stadium): Reds 7, Astros 8 (W: M. Hampton) (L: C. McElroy) (SV: Hudek) (BSV: J. Ruffin)

Game 4 (at The Astrodome): Astros 1, Reds 5 (W: Smiley) (L: D. Kile)

Game 5 (at Riverfront Stadium): Reds 4, Astros 2 (W: J. Rijo) (L: D. Drabek) (SV: Brantley)

It's "failure to launch" for the Astros, as Cincinnati takes the series in five games. The Reds will now meet the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS.

Coming soon (perhaps later today, or tomorrow): the ALCS/NLCS!

It's LCS time!

ALCS: New York Yankees v Chicago White Sox

Having conquered the Tribe in a three-game sweep, the surging Yanks must now deal with the "South Siders".

Game 1 (at Comiskey Park): White Sox 7, Yankees 3 (W: J. McDowell) (L: X. Hernandez) (SV: K. McCaskill) (BSV: X. Hernandez)

Game 2 (at Comiskey Park): White Sox 6, Yankees 10 (W: J. Key) (L: W. Alvarez)

Game 3 (at Yankee Stadium): Yankees 9, White Sox 6, 13 innings (W: S. Kamieniecki) (L: J. Deleon) (BSV: McCaskill)

Game 4 (at Yankee Stadium): Yankees 5, White Sox 7 (W: J. Bere) (L: S. Hitchcock) (SV: D. Cook)

Game 5 (at Yankee Stadium): Yankees 4, White Sox 3, 10 innings (W: X. Hernandez) (L: R. Hernandez)

Game 6 (at Comiskey Park): White Sox 7, Yankees 11 (W: J. Abbott) (L: McDowell)

New York lives up to its "Bronx Bombers" nickname, taking their twenty-third American League championship; the franchise's first since 1981.
______________________________________________________

Before we get started with the NLCS, I need to make a small change to the rules.

The Atlanta Braves ended up having a better regular season record than the NL Central champion Reds. Nevertheless, the Braves only qualified as a wild card. As such, it is Cincinnati who will get home field advantage in the NLCS.

NLCS: Cincinnati Reds v Atlanta Braves

The suddenly surprising Braves knocked off Montreal in the NLDS. Can they do the same to the "Big Red Machine"?

Game 1 (at Fulton County Stadium): Braves 7, Reds 10, 12 innings (W: H. Carrasco) (L: G. McMichael) (SV: P. Schourek) (BSV: J. Brantley, M. Stanton)

Game 2 (at Fulton County Stadium): Braves 3, Reds 2 (W: G. Maddux) (L: J. Rijo) (SV: McMichael)

Game 3 (at Riverfront Stadium): Reds 6, Braves 3 (W: J. Smiley) (L: T. Glavine) (SV: Brantley)

Game 4 (at Riverfront Stadium): Reds 2, Braves 1 (W: T. Browning) (L: K. Mercker) (SV: Brantley)

Game 5 (at Riverfront Stadium): Reds 6, Braves 10 (W: Maddux) (L: E. Hanson) (CG: Maddux)

Game 6 (at Fulton County Stadium): Braves 6, Reds 0 (W: Stanton) (L: J. Ruffin) (SH: Stanton)

Game 7 (at Riverfront Stadium): Reds 0, Braves 7 (W: Maddux) (L: Rijo) (CG: Maddux) (SH: Maddux)

Cincinnati begins the series with an extra inning victory, and then proceeds to win two out of the next three. Then, in Game 6, the Reds' bats fall silent. In the final game, Cincinnati is unable to solve Greg Maddux; the Braves emerge as National League Champions, four games to two.

Next up: The 1994 World Series.

After a long and exciting season, the wait is finally over; it's time for the 1994 World Series to get underway. The New York Yankees have captured the AL pennant, and are looking to take their first world championship since 1978.

On the NL side, the Atlanta Braves' pitching staff has led them to their first National League championship since 1958, when they played as the Milwaukee Braves. Their challenge now is to shut down the bats of the "Bronx Bombers", and bring a world championship to "Hot-lanta". Will the Braves get it done, or will the "Yanks" return to glory?

Game 1 (at Fulton County Stadium): Braves 2, Yankees 1 (W: M. Stanton) (L: S. Kamieniecki) (SV: G. McMichael)

Game 2 (at Fulton County Stadium): Braves 7, Yankees 0 (W: G. Maddux) (L: J. Key) (CG: Maddux) (SH: Maddux)

Game 3 (at Yankee Stadium): Yankees 1, Braves 6 (W: T. Glavine) (L: Kamieniecki) (CG: Glavine)

Game 4 (at Yankee Stadium): Yankees 10, Braves 8 (W: Key) (L: S. Avery) (SV: S. Howe)

Game 5 (at Yankee Stadium): Yankees 4, Braves 1 (W: M. Perez) (L: J. Smoltz) (SV: Howe)

Game 6 (at Fulton County Stadium): Braves 5, Yankees 1 (W: Glavine) (L: Kamieniecki) (SV: McMichael)

The Yankees start off the series with cold bats, but heat up in Game 4, when they ding Atlanta to the tune of ten runs. Scott Kamieniecki has trouble on the mound, losing both Game 1 and Game 3.

New York makes it interesting, but in the end, the Braves have too much pitching. In Game 6, the duo of Tom Glavine and Greg McMichael bring victory to the oldest team on the "senior circuit". At long last, Atlanta has its world championship.

Notes: Fred McGriff has an outstanding Game 6, going one for three with three RBIs and a walk. For his efforts, "Crime Dog" is voted in as the MVP of the 1994 World Series.

Coming soon: the 1995 post-season! Hope you enjoyed the 94 season. :)

The 1995 MLB Regular Season has ended, and it's time for the post-season to begin. The Boston Red Sox have had an impressive year. They've gone 98-64, taking the AL East title in the process. Over on the "Senior Circuit", the Cincinnati Reds have emerged as contenders. The "Big Red Machine" managed to compile a 96-66 record, which was good enough to capture the NL Central division championship.

Other divisional champions:

  • AL Central: Kansas City Royals (92-70)
  • AL West: Seattle Mariners (95-67)
  • NL West: Los Angeles Dodgers (94-68)
  • NL East: New York Mets (92-70)
The playoffs will kick off with the "win or go home" Wild Card Games.

It's time for the two MLB Wild Card Games, where anything can happen, and often does. In the American League, the New York Yankees (93-69) will entertain the California Angels (91-71). Projected starters are Jack McDowell for the "Bronx Bombers", and Chuck Finley for California.

Over in the NL, the surprising Colorado Rockies (92-70) look to keep up their winning ways, as they face the Houston Astros (91-71). Colorado sends Bill Swift to the mound; he will be opposed by Shane Reynolds.

Results:

New York Yankees 8, California Angels 2

Yanks' pitcher Jack McDowell turns in a masterful performance, going the distance in New York. The "Halos" never could wake up their bats, as McDowell gives up just two runs on seven hits, while sitting down four.

Colorado Rockies 1, Houston Astros 9

The Rockies prove unable to solve Shane Reynolds, who fans nine batters. Derek Bell also comes up big for Houston. As part of a three-for-five day, Bell smacks a pitch deep into the bleachers, helping to pace the 'Stros to victory.

Next up: the Division Series!

Having completed the two Wild Card Games, it's now time for the Division Series.

ALDS: Boston Red Sox v New York Yankees

Two old rivals meet again, as the "Bombers" battle the "BoSox". Who will get the better of this matchup?

Game 1 (at Yankee Stadium): Yankees 7, Red Sox 6 (W: S. Bankhead) (L: S. Belinda)

Game 2 (at Fenway Park): Red Sox 9, Yankees 1 (W: T. Wakefield) (L: D. Cone) (CG: Wakefield)

Game 3 (Fenway Park): Red Sox 5, Yankees 3 (W: R. Clemens) (L: J. McDowell) (SV: R. Aguilera)

Game 4 (Yankee Stadium): Yankees 3, Red Sox 1 (W: R. Macdonald) (L: Belinda) (SV: J. Wetteland)

Game 5 (Fenway Park): Red Sox 0, Yankees 2 (W: B. Wickman) (L: Wakefield) (SV: Wetteland) (SH: Wickman)

The Yanks take a hard-fought series, and advance to the ALCS.

ALDS: Seattle Mariners v Kansas City Royals

In the "Emerald City", baseball has recently fallen on hard times. Can the Mariners restore civic pride, and save baseball in Seattle?

Game 1 (at Kauffman Stadium): Royals 8, Mariners 7 (W: H. Pichardo) (L: J. Nelson) (BSV: R. Meacham)

Game 2 (at The Kingdome): Mariners 4, Royals 2 (W: R. Johnson) (L: C. Haney) (SV: B. Ayala)

Game 3 (The Kingdome): Mariners 3, Royals 8 (13 innings) (W: M. Magnante) (L: B. Wells) (BSV: J. Montgomery)

Game 4 (Kauffman Stadium): Royals 10, Mariners 3 (W: M. Gubicza) (L: B. Wolcott)

Kansas City rejoices, as their Royals are off to the ALCS....but "there is no joy in Mudville", or Seattle. Shortly after the end of Game 4, team management announces that the M's will be moving to Phoenix, AZ, for the 1996 season. The "mighty" Mariners are "out".

Next up: the NLDS.
