What if Germany mid WW1 came to the concluison that Austria-Hungary was more of a liability than a benefit to their war effort?
In secret they propose a deal to the Italian and Hungarian governments in which Austria-Hungary would be partitioned. Germany would annex Austria proper and Bohemia, Italy would get Dalmatia, Istria and south Tyrol in return for a seperate peace, Hungary would recieve full independence. What would happen to Bosnia I'm unsure of, perhaps becoming a protectorate under Hungary with the intent of merging it with Serbia once conquered. Galicia-Volhynia might be split between Ukraine and Poland to motivate coorporation between them and Germany (if this is post Brest-Litovsk).
Would Italy and Hungary accept such a deal under any circumstance? Would the partition succeed or could AH fight back? How would the war and eventual peace be affected?
