Paris Commune is Successful

Hard to say, depends entirely on how they managed to take power if the army defected like they expected its very different then if there was a long protracted civil war.

My paternal side of my family may never have migrated to N. America.

Both sides of my family would probably be French actually, one half are Ukrainians exiled for being the wrong kind of communists the other half where some variety of Italian leftists (I forget what they actually called themselves).

A long lasting Civil War requires that the Commune has more support on the French mainland. This is due to, how likely outside European intervention is likely and breaking down this factor will leave us with Germany. But why do that, when, Alsac-Lorraine was under firm Prussian control and France dumbfounded? Maybe if Wilhelm I and Bismarck found it necessary to further leash the French people, rob them of foriegn support (if the Commune-ists achieve victory), and take there attention off their blistering hate towards Germany to avoid future conflict? It's as likely as it is unlikely. Perhaps much needed men to restore order are POW for a few more months, maybe surrendered arms, supplies, and all the rest are funneled to the commune. In conclusion, any form of sucess on the Commune's part lies with Prussia, which can either support them indirectly or not at all.

Again don't forget the army themselves, its almost a certainty the communards are gonna need to win over the rank and file soldiers. You will also want to discredit the moderates in the long term and make sure the monarchists are divided. All this is gonna need a POD well before the Franco-Prussian war started.

My paternal ancestors were socialist Communard sympathizers living in Strasbourg. They were forced to leave Alsace by the Prussians and there was no place for them in post-Commune France. So, off overseas. The rest is history...;)

If it's a civil-war directly after the Franco-Prussian War, then it mustn't be forgotten that German troops were still occupying French land until the war indemnities were paid. I doubt that the Conservative Bismark would allow the Communists to take over France, and it's more likely that his German troops will support an army lead by Orleanists, which may ironically calm many of the tensions between France and Germany over Alsace-Lorraine.

Would even a 'successful' commune have anything more than the city? The rest of the country isnt interested in going communard.

Actually there were Communes in Lyon, Marseille, Limoges, Toulouse, Saint-Etienne and Narbonne. I have a few proposition for a more succesfull Commune : Blanqui isn't captured and join the Commune, the war against Germany is longer, monarchist aren't united and republicans are more radicalized.
