May 25, 2013 #5 pternagy Short answer: No. Long answer: Maybe if something bordering on ASB territory happens; such as: Crusader States are recognized as papal fiefs and we get a (short lived) Papal Empire during the Crusades The Pope somehow allows/encourages/supports a merchant class in the Papal States and they form a colonial empire akin to Venice. One of the anti-papal Roman Republics lives long enough to try to become Venice 2.0 and the Pope retains their possessions when he takes over Columbus is rejected in Spain but ends up flattering the Borgias enough that Alexander VI sends him to find the Americas One of the 19th Century Popes takes up cause of Italian unity and becomes the head of state of Italy and, thus, the Italian colonial empire.
