Guderian(now chief of armored troops):my furhrer why do we attack at all in the east this year
Hitler: we need a political victory to shore up our front
Hitler: although every time I think of this offensive it makes my stomach turn over
Guderian: my furhrer we must build a general reserve or we will lose everything we have
Hitler:Zietler has promised success and we only have to go a short distance
Guderian: (pod time) sir why did you bring me back into service if you will not take my council. I have renergized the panzer forces, morale is starting to go back up. Model has shown us these defences with ariel photos they are too great for us. Manstein isnt supremely confident either. I beg you my furhrer cancel zitadelle or I must resign my post.
Hitler: I told you before general I need you, please regain your nerve.
Guderian: (now standing) sir I will not stand by while you send the panzer forces on a death ride for a meaningless objective how many people even know where Kursk is?
Keitel: (previously silent) we must attack for political reasons general.
Guderian: What political reason can be left we are fighting the whole world and our allies are useless (balkans armies and italy) or a whole world away (japan). The army is too weak after our failure at Stalingrad we must bleed the allies and force a favorable peace, our days of conquest are over.
Hitler: (stung by the reference to Stalingrad which to Guderian's face he had taken personal responsibility for) General I do not wish you to resign I am in your debt and your work with the armored forces has been exemplary since you came back, please offer an alternative and I will listen. Keitel! signal the army groups that our offensive is to be postponed indefinently
Guderian opened a folder containing his drafts of the new German operational plans, however it was not going to be a smooth ride for the general, he had just nearly had a nervous breakdown fighting with the army high command and Hitler and he was only back in the saddle a few months! There would still be a big battle this year and big battles to come but the chief of armored troops swore under his breath that they would be on his terms
