Pan Am doesn`t order Boeing 747

The Boeing 747 was launched by PanAm in 1965. PanAm`s order of 25 planes was very critical to get the 747 launched.

Suppose PanAm didn`t need the 747. Would another airline like Japan Airlines, British Airways or TWA launch the 747....

Well since no replies yet, I imagine the DC-10 might have had better sucesses...MD-11 even the giant double-decker MD-12 might have been built.

Lockheed had a proposal for a civilian C-5 called the C-500 but Lockheed was very tied up in military and space projects so it is doubtful the C-500 would have fared better...

If I remember correctly the 747 started as a entry in the build off for what ended up being the C-5 Galaxy. It didn't win and was converted to a passenger plane. Just like with the Airbus 380 it was envisioned to have lounges as well as bedrooms and so forth. I always thought that maybe the 2707(The sst) may of become reality then.

I don't think even Boeing could have managed that. OTL Concorde was so difficult that it "succeeded" only because the National Pride of two nations were at stake.

And no doubt the lofty vision will be sacrificed in the 380 to carrying as many as possible in cattle class

without the order of the 747 Pan am would not have faced sthe same financial dificulties. The 747 was ahead of its time.we might still have Pan am.although the company did make a lot of other mistakes and blunders.
