Pakistani and Indian relations without Kashmir

Say after the First Kashmir War the area is divided into Hindu and Muslim areas like the rest of the Sub Continent

What would relations be like between Pakistan and India

I think you mean Jammu and Kashmir. Calling it Kashmir is like calling Britain England - it totally sidelines a large number of people.

Also, it can't be broken up into Hindu and Muslim areas, as Ladakh is Buddhist-majority. Presumably Ladakh is given to India here.

Anyways, if this is the case, I expect much better relations between India and Pakistan - something much more similar to India and Bangladesh rather than OTL's frigid relationship.

Is it sufficient to divide it along ethnic lines (even if possible)? As far as I understand the possession of rivers is also a big point of contention.

Should be, but the entire mess went down to a Hindu ruler pressured to accede a Muslim-majority princely state to a Hindu-majority nation at the risk of being annexed by a Muslim-majority nation. 'All or nothing' seemed far more appealing than more partitions, to both sides.
