Out of the Shadows of the Forest
In the great Frankish capital, Tournai, a king’s son was born. It is said that on that day the Heaven’s wept. For they feared this boy. His name would have be Clovis, King of the Franks, Conqueror of All Roman Gaul. No one knew the profound impact of this one boy being born would have had on the world. Sadly that child died and on that day his father, Childeric I, wept for the first time in his life. But Childeric could not weep, for he was a king, and he had other duties to perform. He had to produce an heir. For if he didn’t a powerful nobleman might find him unfit to rule. The first thing that he would do, would be to have his wife strangled in the night. Later in his life when asked why he had this done, he replied, “Who’s fault could it be but the woman’s? It is my right from the God’s to rule and if I rule with the God’s blessing then how could it have been my fault the child was born sickly and died. He then offered his hand in marriage to the daughter of the King of the Ripuarian Franks. His daughter, Clotide, was very beautiful and pleased Childeric. Nine months after they were married in a lavish ceremony, a son was born, this son would be called Merovech, he would be King of All Franks.
