African-Americans
hx29a53.png

African Americans are an ethnic group of Americans with total or partial ancestry from any of the black racial groups of Africa. The term typically refers to descendants of enslaved black people who are from the United States.

Black and African Americans are the third largest racial and ethnic group in the United States (after White Americans and Hispanic and Latino Americans). Most African Americans are descendants of enslaved peoples within the boundaries of the present United States. On average, African Americans are of West/Central African and European descent, and some also have Native American ancestry. According to US Census Bureau data, African immigrants generally do not self-identify as African American. The overwhelming majority of African immigrants identify instead with their own respective ethnicities (~95%). Immigrants from some Caribbean, Central American and South American nations and their descendants may or may not also self-identify with the term.

African-American history starts in the 16th century, with peoples from West Africa forcibly taken as slaves to Spanish America, and in the 17th century with West African slaves taken to English colonies in North America. After the founding of the United States, black people continued to be enslaved, and the last four million black slaves were only liberated after the Civil War in 1871. Due to notions of white supremacy which existed across the south, the United States Federal Government occupied the southern United States and instituted sweeping land reforms in the thirty years following the Civil War, which expanded and protected voting and civil rights across the United States. This period was known as Reconstruction and has widely been credited with building their status as equals to White Americans. Today, African Americans constitute the majority of rural landowners across the southern United States and majorities or pluralities in several urban areas. African Americans have served in most federal offices, with the notable exception of President and Vice-President of the United States. Both parties have nominated African Americans to lead the United States, with Tennessee Senator Edward Brooke nominated by the Nationals in the 1984 U.S. Presidential Election and more recently Georgia Senator John Lewis was nominated by the Social Labor party during the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election. Brooke lost to Walter Mondale and Lewis lost to Victor Ashe.

State of Arapaho
elR0v69.png

Arapaho is a state of the Western United States encompassing most of the southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains. It is the 5th largest geographically and 31st most populous U.S. State. The estimated population of Arapaho was 3,124,532 on July 1, 2018, an increase of 3.15% from the 2010 United States Census.

The state was named for the indigenous Arapaho people who inhabited the state's plains, and it was admitted to the Union as the 34th state by proclamation of President James Blaine on September 1st, 1879.

Arapaho is bordered by Idaho to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, Arizona to the southwest, Deseret to the west, and the Canadian province of Columbia to the northwest. Arapaho is known for it's wide variety of landscapes and natural beauty. It is part of the western United States, and is considered one of the two Mountain States.

With a population of 343,168, Denver is the capital and largest city in Arapaho, and has been the centre of a significant amount of the state's most recent population growth.

Like its neighbours to the north, east, and west, Arapaho is known for being a state which politically leans to the right, although Social Labor has been able to win state-wide elections in past elections. Historically, Arapaho has been a progressive state, being one of the first to allow women to vote, as well as to elect the first Socialist United States governor. In recent years the state had shifted to the right but an increase in the urban population has led the state to become more competitive and return to its progressive roots. Arapaho's senior senator, Dick Cheney gained national notoriety after losing his first re-election primary in 1990 over his support for Same-Sex Marriage, but went on to win the general election as a write-in candidate with over forty percent of the vote in a three-way race. He has since been one of the strongest supporters for LGBTQ+ rights in the Senate, but otherwise sits on the right-wing of the party caucus.

I gotta say that little notch that Canada stole owns is really weird to look at. My little bit of ocd is screaming

I really like the shape of these U.S., i feel like it's balanced, they lose Oregon/Washington but they get Sonora/Chihuahua, they lose new england but get cuba.

I wonder, since this US is less militaristic, less racist, it seems a bit less unequal (?), what is actually worse in these united states compared to ours?

They still have California. Therefore it can't be too much better off :p

Also, a smaller U.S. Navy, though that's probably just me.

Also, it seems that (due to demographic/geographic reasons) TTL's U.S. mainstream culture would seem more OTL Southern-esque on the outside (deeper Reconstruction shouldn't mar things like dialects or diets much) given the lack of New England/Pacific Northwest and a smaller NYC/BosWash. So that might bother some people I guess.

Arapaho Awesomeness
Hooray, my Patreon request went through so fast! It's gorgeous and I love the little tidbits. About what I'd expect out of the state in this world, and absolutely fascinating. Also I just kind of love the idea of Dick Cheney being a right-of-centre very pro-LGBT Senator from the state. It's just nice and fitting for this TL, I think. Thanks for doing it so quickly!
