So, I take it Paraguay never stopped being a hellhole?
It's basically whinged from dictatorship to kinda liberalised to dictatorship since losing the Chaco War to Bolivia.
Just noticed an independent Riau Islands, how did they come about to be independent? Are they similar to Singapore being in such a strategic location? Or are they more like Singapore’s backwater brother?
They became independent during the Indonesian War. What's the Indonesian War? Well, you'll have to wait until the summer/fall when I begin the Asia Tour in earnest
@Kanan What's pop culture like ITTL?
I'd say pretty similar to our own, but you need to take into account that consumerism has far less of an impact on society and culture, so it would be fairly different in that sense.
The fact that there are about 1 million less people in TTL Israel that includes the West Bank, Gaza, and the Sinai than ITTL has me really worried about the Palestinian population.
Israel is not a fun place.
Not to mention the Nazis don't exist and the Holocaust was butterflied away, meaning that more Jews (especially Ashkenazis) stay in Central and Eastern Europe in this world.
Correct.
Hey wait a second, since there was no holocaust or even a proper WWII and the resulting immigration, how did this Israel grow out of Mandatory Palestine anyway?
If my assumptions are correct, active military rebellion. Also explains why it's an underdeveloped military junta instead of a high-tech democracy.
The idea of a Jewish state in Palestine pre-dates the Holocaust (see: Balfour Declaration), and this Israel is an outgrowth of that. During the 1910s to 1940s, a large number of Europe's Jewish population did migrate away, some towards the British Colony of Palestine, and others to the new world (the United States and Brazil are prime examples). Palestine eventually was given responsible government that set out to establish an equal state, and due to pressure on London to have a friendly state next to the Suez, Britain granted Palestine defacto independence in the 1950s. The country was highly unstable, and during the Suez Crisis, while Britain was busy keeping the peace in Germany, the Palestinian military declared the country a Republic, renamed it to Israel, and has ruled with an iron fist since then under a doctrine of self-reliance. It's a doctrine that mixes a lot of the elements of fascism and communism.
Amazing world map by the way, but I also want to mention that after creeping Kanan's reddit posts, the map with European countries in North America (which I saw a few days ago but I did not realize was from her) is absolutely brilliant and perfectly absurd so I'm shouting that out too.
Thanks!!
This is the offending map in question, so people don't have to trudge through my reddit history haha
