Ottoman Southern Italy and Hungary without Egypt and Syria

So what if Selim I looks to continue Ottoman conquest of the west rather than expanding into the Middle East and he conquers the Kingdom of Naples and the Kingdom of Sicily and later one of his decedents conquers Hungary? What might this much more European Ottoman Empire look like? How might the much larger numbers of Christians in comparison to the number of Muslims in the empire effect religion in the empire?

Selim did give the Safavids a major beating, Perhaps he does better to point of killing or capturing Ismail to nip them in the bud perhaps? Even so why go for Southern Italy and Hungary, when Egypt if i'm not mistaken is still a valuable prize.

Perhaps he is obsessed with the idea of the Ottoman's being an Islamic Roman Dynasty and wants to conquer Rome so he invades Sicily and Naples and conquers them.

Or more rationally the invasion of Hungary and Southern Italy are considered more worthwhile for their ability to supply more potential Jannisaries and pay the Jizya.

Holding Southern Italy would be a useful shield against Western incursions, and would seal of the eastern med. There's a reason Roman Italy survived in the South centuries longer than in the rest of the peninsula.
