Otl Qing religious demographics

I was thinking of a potential ah idea based in 18th/19th century China and I realised I’d need some more information on religious demographics in the Qing dynasty to see whether its viable. Obviously today’s China is radically irreligious, and I can’t find any data pre mao whatsoever, let alone from around the late Qing years.

So, does anyone know in rough terms how many people subscribed to Buddhist beliefs during the middle of the Qing dynasty? What about folk religions? Islam?

Well, it's worth noting the population of the modern PRC has strong religions, including Abrahamic ones, that have survived the test of time and boast millions of adherents. Everything from the basket of traditions labels "Chinese folk religion" to Daoism and Confucianism to Buddhism to Falun Gong attests to this. Religion is also strong in Taiwan.

For data on the late Qing, it may help to search for info on specific subregions: Mongolia, Tibet, Xinjiang, the Hui regions of Gansu and Ningxia, etc. You can also look at studies on the 1800s millenarian movements like the Taiping and Boxers.

Barend ter Haar has done some interesting studies of imperial Chinese religion. I'd recommend his work on the White Lotus sect specifically.
