1. Manned flight.
As long as there were people looking at birds and dreaming about how great it was to fly - there was someone that would eventually build a machine that would have them fly through the air.
2. Man on the Moon.
The dream of man sailing to the Moon, dates back to the Roman Empire - wherein there is a Roman Satire where a Roman legion sails off the flat-edge of the earth arrives on the Moon. The King of the Moon says to the legion, "Roman, go home, there are no women here."
Jump ahead, there were other writers dreaming of flights to the moon, even in the midst of the Inquisition there was a few moon-trip stories written down.
Eventually someone would take one of those stories and say, "Let us make this a reality."
Robert Goddard read Verne and Wells, he became the father of US rocketry hoping to someday make it a reality.
Von Braun read Verne and Wells, he became the father of Nazi rocketry dreaming of that day. When told of his V-2 hitting London. "The rocket performed perfectly, it just landed on the wrong planet."
Many rocket scientists today even without the Cold War looming over them still dream of the day we can fly to the moon as we can fly from London to Paris.
3. The Stock Market Crash
Any student of the Tulip Craze, South Sea Bubble, the Canal mania, and the like can see that in the 1920's that the market was overdue for a major correction.
