Orthography: better preservation of original spellings

Facts: Privernum, the name of an ancient Roman town, has two descendent forms: Piperno and Priverno. Priverno, where the classical spelling is better preserved, became the official name of the town in 1927, before that, Piperno had been the recognized name for centuries .

Observation: less corrupt forms could be installed or reinstated.

Extrapolation: the reinstatement of Fiorenza, supposedly an earlier form than Firenze, which is reflected in the demonym, Fiorentini.

Facts: the spelling of Florentia is better preserved in Spanish (Florencia) and arguably in Russian (Флоренция, Florentsia) than in Italian (Firenze); the best vernacular preservation of Mediolanum is perhaps in Polish (Mediolan, probably a learned borrowing) since other vernacular forms (like Milano, Milan) are more corrupt.

Observation: classical spellings could be better preserved in foreign languages through borrowing or other means than in local languages through direct inheritance.

Extrapolation: Aurelianum (Orléans) preserved as Aurelian in certain languages, Lugdunum (Lyon) as Lugdun in certain languages, etc.
