Origins of Bread and Cheese

Hello all! Recently, I had a strange thought, and that strange thought is the title of this thread. Now, what I'd like to know is if the tradition of offering only bread and cheese to guests was historically just an Italian idea, or if it was more wide spread. For instance, could guests in England expect this offer? Or in Spain, or Ireland, or where every really.

In Russia, they typically offered bread and salt instead. It's an old Slavic custom, so it's probably found in other Slavic countries.
