Order and Progress: An Alternate History of Mexico

Order and Progress: An Alternate History of Mexico

Foreword
Porfirio Diaz is a very polarizing figure in Mexican history. While it is undeniable that it was thanks to him Mexico rose from international laughingstock to one of the most powerful countries in North America, many correctly point out that he accomplished it at the price of national freedoms and the oppression of the poor.
If one looks at the history of the country before and after Diaz came to power, however, one can see the measures he took during his 28-year dictatorship are, at the very least, understandable.

(Hey everyone, welcome to my first TL! I started this and posted the first chapter a long time ago, but I pulled out to change the POD further back and work out some kinks. Please enjoy, and let me know what you think, if something needs to be changed and the like)

Great to see another Mexican timeline! :D Porfirio Diaz is a very interesting figure in Mexican history. Really looking forward to see how things play out.

Thanks! I love the Mexican TLs in here, and I decided to contribute by using a period rarely seen, the Porfiriato.

Here's chapter 1. A little short because I'm just setting up the set up, basically. After this the chapters should get a bit longer.

Part 1: The year 1890
When Porfirio Diaz took power in 1876, he set out to fix the problems that had plagued the country since it won its independence back in 1821. Under the slogan of “Order and Progress”, he began to fix the economy, as well as pacify and modernize the country.
In 1890, all his efforts seemed in vain.
Thanks to a harsh drought that cause many harvests to be lost, as well as a sudden devaluation on the price of silver (Mexico's biggest export), the country was going through an economic crisis. Adding to the problems, rebellions were simmering underneath the facade of stability, needing only a spark to erupt.
In August of that year, the country would get that spark when the Baja California War began.

Dude yes. I have a lot of research but mostly from Spasnish websites. Send me a couple of the ones you have, especially from the 1890s.
