Operation Resurrection

On May 13, 1958, French Army units seized control of French Algeria. The military demanded that General de Gaulle be handed power and a more efficient (in their opinion) handling of the Algerian War.
On May 24 putschist Algeria-based paratroopers took Corsica, meeting virtually no resistance.
On May 29 Parliament accepted de Gaulle at gun-point as the new PM (Président du Conseil).

Operation Resurrection was a contingency plan in case de Gaulle couldn't be made PM for some reason or if the communists tried to take over. It involved landing paratroopers in Paris to take the seat of government and in other major airports throughout the country and deploying armoured divisions in the streets of the capital.

WI de Gaulle had died between the 13th and the 29th? Would the generals be foolish enough to actually carry out the operation? Long-term consequences? Reactions abroad (esp. NATO)?

NB: I've read maverick wrote a TL on the topic a long time ago but I haven't found it so far. Can anyone provide a link?

You can't find it because maverick deleted most threads and posts he made in the Great Moderator Sabotage of 2011.

This PoD seems quite interesting- more turmoil in Western Europe during the Cold War would be pretty neat.

France under Military rule, thats a scary thought, they could pull it off I think, they had a lot of civilian support, you'd see stuff like May 1968 much sooner put likely crushed, and sorry to Algeria they'll never be free.

Apparently if their hands were untied they planned to go all-out with airdropped chemical and biological weapons if necessary. It would make Saddam's war on the Kurds and marsh Arabs pale in comparison, plus be the largest use of chemical weapons since Unit 731.

one would also wonder given that at the same time they were working on their nukes program....

What about a civil war? Or the junta pulling a Rhodesia?

unlikely, most of the older French and middle Class supported de Gaulle for 10 years in OTL, I think they'd go along with Military rule, things would be rocky in Paris, Students and the working class will be pissed so will a lot of people in Paris but the rest of France not so much.
