Operation LONG JUMP successful

Just read an article in a mil hist mag on this ABWEHR attempt to assassinate all 3 Allied leaders during the 1943 Tehran Conference- WI they'd been successful ?

The replacements are interesting - Wallace, Attlee (perhaps temporarily) and Molotov (again, perhaps temporarily)

Goebbels would surely make great play of it, since his propaganda regularly castigated them as evil warmongers

It MIGHT bring retaliation, but the worry about assassinating Nazi leaders was not that they would do the same thing to Allied leaders, but that the Nazis would do like they did after Heydrich and wipe out hundreds+ of civilians in retaliation.

Is Eden best placed to succeed Churchill on a longer-term basis ? Attlee was Deputy PM, and in the immediate aftermath would be the guy taking control, but the king would be unlikely to ask him IMHO to form a government

"President Wallace" should sound pretty terrifying to anyone who's read the TL, "For All Time", even if said TL was written entirely with dystopia in mind.

As for the "temporarily" do you mean to suggest there would be some kind of internal Soviet power struggle for succession?

Well, Beria comes to mind, but I was thinking more along the lines of there needing to be a formal election in the Politburo or whatever, and that the roles may be split. Molotov might remain in charge, but someone else may be elevated to head of state per se

I don't know why any foriegn power would want to assassinate a President. We'd just elect a new one. The death of FDR before his time would have had an impact on morale, but would have strengthen American resolve as well.

The Soviets might be relieved to be rid of Stalin, that is unless Beria takes over, then they'd be right back where they started. Had he been taken out in 1945, then the Red Army might have launched a coup and somebody like Zhukov would be in charge.
