Operation Downfall

I agree with Paul Large on a number of his points. but not all.
1. I don't think that the USSR would be allowed to take Korea for ex, they just didn't have enough troops in the Far East, to grab it before the US did.
2. My big thought is what is going on in the USA.
(A) A lack of MANpower would mean more women in the workforce longer.
(B) Same thing for other minorities.
(C) A more Militarized US, with a continuation of the Draft
(D) PTSD becomes common
(E) Kids growing up with Dad not being around as much, and all the trouble that will cause
(F) A 1947 version of the "Patriot Act" & the FBI going nuts with power
(G) A far more paranoid USA
And that just in the USA

Might the US try to develop and are use lethal gasses that are heavier than air? Pop the canisters and let the gas drop down into the tunnels? They might also start to spray herbicides on the rice crops to kill of the food sources.

It was proposed in May 1945.

It was rejected but if the US had to invade Japan they could have used herbicide compounds or mustard agents prior to invading.
