One Lucky Blitz

so everyone does WWII POD with Sealion, Barbarossa, or Halliflax over Churchill.

what if the luftwaffe just got lucky, and the entire British Royal Family dies in the Blitz? Remember they did stay in London rather than flee to Canada
Does the Goverment continue to exist in Britian? Or do they relocate to Canada? what about the Moral damage to the British people? And then does Hitler go forth with Operation Sealion?

I doubt there's anybody preferring "Halliflax" over old Winnie.

You always have a distant cousin handy in these cases.

Does the Goverment continue to exist in Britian?

And why not?

Or do they relocate to Canada?

And why?

what about the Moral damage to the British people?

What damage? In history, Buckingham Palace was hit during the Battle of Britain, and this provided a huge morale boost to the British. They saw even the Royals "could take it" and keep fighting. If the Royal Family is killed, this will harden the British will to fight to the last.

And then does Hitler go forth with Operation Sealion?

Well, let's hope so. It would give the British an immediate vengeance for the death of the Royal Family. And I hope the soldiery keep their cool when facing those masses of German POWs.

Given the numbers in the Royal Family there would always be someone in the line of Succession. BTW the only time they would have retired to Canada would be if the British isles had been overwhelmed by the Germans.

The Government is not dependent on the Monarch being alive.

Why would the Government go to London merely because the Royal Family had been killed.

God help the Germans if they had tried to invade.

The King and Queen remained in London, but I believe that the princesses were evacuated to Windsor Castle. So the luftwaffe would have to get extremely lucky to kill them all.

Cheers,
Nigel.

Out of curiosity, how far down the list would Germany have to go to get a pro-Axis member of the Royal Family? Could Edward return as King in this scenario? And would that result in discrediting the royal family entirely?

I see the UK Royals as basically national symbols who spread goodwill and have largely a ceremonial role in government. But what would have happened if Edward returned in 1940?

If anything, that would be one unlucky hit. There isn't a whole lot that could have pissed off the British even more, but this could have done it.

Yeah, I think there'd be serious trouble, even today if someone killed a member of the Royal Family, you'd be suprised at how important some people (including myself) view the Royal Family as. I think it would have screwed the Germans over bigtime, as we would be fighting alot harder and angrier, but possibly could have resulted on some rash descisions on behalf of some generals in an attempt to get 'revenge'

Edward has written himself out of the succession. Parliament can simply write anyone else out by amending the Act of Settlement. Finding new royals is really not a problem.

It's not just us Brits whom are going to be pissed off, India has a King Emperor, Canada has a King so does Australia etc etc. Do you really want that many people out for youe blood ?
Nothing but total victory would and could have been acceptable after that. No surrender no matter how bad and no negotiation on any level.
as they say " every silver lining has a cloud " and this one would contain thunder and lightning

Henry, Duke of Gloucester (at the time somewhere in the army) becomes king.

Yes, I was going to say that. Its VAGUELY possible that you could find the princesses at the same place as their parents, and blow them all up in one lucky strike, but the Duke of Gloucester won't be there

At an earlier date, (prior to mid 1941 I think) you also have the Duke of Kent and his family as backups to Gloucester, but then he died in an aircrash, leaving two sons

The succession will never run out, and if a young child ends up king there's always senior royals to act as Regent - the Connaughts, for example, at a pinch
