From the onset I'm presuming that Kennedy can't unseat Humphrey for the nomination-not even Daley's delegation would hand him the nomination.
But Kennedy will be there. He's in a unique position as far as the chaos is concerned. His family had a long relationship with Mayor Daley dating back to 1956. But he's also running as one of the candidates of the people Daley despised-the Civil Rights and anti-Vietnam war movements. Kennedy is therefore probably on as good terms with the protesters as a mainstream candidate could possibly be. Unlike Eugene McCarthy he's also candidate Mayor Daley will talk to and might even support for the nomination.
How precisely would Kennedy and his campaign have handled Chicago and what long term impact might that have? How would Kennedy have reacted to the protests and Daley's reaction.
If he cannot be the nominee would he have fought for any changes in the platform or tried to convince Humphrey to pick someone other than Muskie for his running mate?
What happens in Chicago if Robert Kennedy is there?
