On a wing & a prayer...

This thread is based on how, during 1946-49, the fledgling Israeli armed forces smuggled arms, vehicles & personnel into Palestine in many threadbare & ingenious ways for the fight against the Arabs. In such ways as stealing a few beaufighters from an air dem, onstration in Scotland which were then flown directly to Israel, on the purported basis of borrowing these planes for an airshow :) Now, could there have been any other potential post-1945 war which could've seen a similar level of ingenuity & inventiveness by 1 side or another ?

When the good guys do it it's ingenuity & inventiveness, when bad guys do it it's treacherous...

The candidates are numerous, but these three come into my mind directly:

-Taliban 2001 & Iraqi Insurgents 2003 -> Facing the only superpower with a shoestring

-Hezbollah ca. 1985 -> Facing Israel and not losing

I think you need a lot of know-how to pull it of. That include familiarity with the system where you try getting your stuff, knowing how to operate said stuff and a ability to plan. That is to say, it isn't easy.

The Israeli example might show that it is easier to pull of after a war, when the military system is in disarray. And people are trained in the skills mentioned above. Another, similar case is the dissolving empires. I'm thinking about the European colonial empires as well as the Soviet empire. (Think about the WMD leaking from the ex-Soviet-scare...)
