This is like the herpes of Alternate history. Nobody likes it but everyone knows about it.
I think like Texas seceded and Israel managed to pull a Red Dawn ASB. It was written in the 70's so they crammed PODs into that stretch of time.
Btw: This is one of our forefathers, people. I kinda understand why Creationist reject evolution now. They might not wanna have ancestors who fling poo, I don't wanna have one with major plot holes and poor story structure.
And I confess I am guilty of having read it.
If I remember it well all began with a IRA terrorist contaminating London water with LSD.

A friend of mine in the 80s told me to read these books. By midway in the fifth book I couldn't take the whole "women want to be slaves and dominated" thing and threw all five books in the trash. And this from a guy who freaks out if a page gets bent or a cover scratched.
