Of Mice and Plumbers: A Nintendo-Disney Timeline

A Look Into 1996: Atari’s Action
And now, let's get back to business.

To see how Atari’s doing, Atari Corporation (instead of Midway) reenters the arcade business by purchasing Time Warner Interactive (the former Atari Games Corp), which includes the post-1984 Atari arcade library for $250 million. Atari released American Hero for the Atari Jaguar that year. Also, there’s another game on the run.

Atari teams up with Universal Interactive to bring Crash Bandicoot to the Atari Jaguar, with Naughty Dog developing, in hopes of Atari letting it compete with Nintendo’s Super Mario and Sega’s Ristar as an established player. (SIDENOTE: Crash Bandicoot is codenamed the “Twin Star’s Ass Game” (Don’t ask))

Atari Corporation released the FMV first-person shooter Maximum Surge to stores for the Atari Jaguar. Also, Atari also introduced the Lynx Pocket, a more-compacted version of the Atari Lynx handheld to stores. Perhaps this should provide some more competition.

Well, with Atari covered so far, let’s get to Sega right now.

BTW, this one's short compared to the ones before it and even the one that comes after it. Stay tuned for what Sega's doing.

Cool! How did Atari survive?

A Look Into 1996: Sega’s Stand
Kept you waiting, huh?

Sega has been rather busy lately, what with the Sega Saturn being around and all that. Notable games that are released that year include Flicky 3D (TTL’s Sonic 3D Blast), Puyo Pop Sun, AM2 Fightimals (TTL’s Sonic the Fighters, which in TTL, is now an original property), Nights into Dreams (which in TTL, it takes place in the same world as Twin Stars), and Ristar Saturn. Now let’s get to Ristar Saturn.

With Ristar the Shooting Star now on the Sega Saturn, things really go a lot bigger. Made in a collaborative effort by the Sega Technical Institute and Traveler’s Tales, it’ll surely be a game changer (if it’s possible).

In Ristar Saturn, it’s described as a 2.5D game rather than a 3D game. The 2.5D elements are used for the majority of the game whereas the 3D elements are used for the boss fights and bonus stages. The game takes place after the events of Ristar 3: Rise of the Death Egg where Ristar (along with Hailey, Phobos, and Deimos) go on a search for Marisa Ursa, who is lost on another planet. The four will travel planets old and new, facing off against opponents old and new, helping folks old and new, and dealing with the return of Kaiser Greedy! Halfway through, it’ll be revealed that Marisa Ursa is lost on Planet Tusarn (anagram for Saturn), and after Ristar reunites with Marisa Ursa, she becomes playable. Another new playable character will the eccentric inventor Dr. Ivo Eggman, who was once an NPC in previous games, and he’s a mechanically unusual playable character, who can only use his gadgets as means of navigation and attack and when he goes underwater, he uses a diving suit for underwater travel.

Once reaching a newly-rebuilt Kaiser Greedy’s Space Citadel, the final battle ensues and Ristar (and the crew) emerge victorious. Also, there are about twenty planets to go to, with twelve bosses on twelve of the twenty planets. The remaining eight are smaller compared to the twelve planets.

Compared to Super Mario 64 and Crash Bandicoot, Ristar Saturn was seen as inferior to its competition, but it’s still well-regarded, nevertheless. It could be possible for more Ristar games to come.

Also, in that year, Sega and Microsoft began teaming up, to launch a mouse adapter for the Sega Saturn, as well as keyboard adapter, in order to make the Saturn look like a workstation. This surely will lead to something that big of a collaboration. Now what else happened in 1996?

Anyway, Happy Leap Day!

Great Job Toon and Good chapter.

Pretty good chapter, I got a question about the dreamers though as in what are you doing with it after the SNES ITTL.

An idea for the plot of a coherent Super Mario Bros. movie. It came to me just now while I was reading the timeline. Use or non-use is entirely up to the author.

Mario and Luigi are Brooklyn plumbers who are encountering some very weird plant parts clogging the pipes they are cleaning. They take a few samples to Dr. Toadah at Brooklyn College (who wears a turban because he is a Sikh, and therefore looks like the character Toad), because they think it's a new species getting caught in the plumbing. It turns out that the plants do not originate on Earth, their biochemistry is so weird.

What's going on is that Bowser, after conquering the Mushroom Kingdom's dimension, wants to expand his empire to our world. He uses a technology that produces portals, but the portals can only exist in cylindrical metal shapes with water in them -- in other words, in pipes! Brooklyn is just a scouting mission, once they have gathered information about our population and infrastructure they will send through massive hordes of Goombas and Koopas to conquer our world. No one will believe the plumbers and the biochemist -- the story is just too strange. They realize they must use the pipe portals to infiltrate the Mushroom dimension and stop the invasion at the source, before Earth is lost. This is Act 1.

After arriving the heroes meet the underground resistance to Bowser's tyranny, led by Princess Daisy, the last free member of the Mushroom Kingdom Congress. (She's not a princess, she's just named Princess). It develops that the plumbers, due to their alien (to the other dimension) biology, can acquire abilities from Mushroom dimension flora that natives cannot, thanks to Toadah's scientific skills With these abilities, they sneak into the mustering ground where Bowser's invading armies are being prepared, intent on destroying the portal machine. But a spy betrays the Resistance, and Princess Daisy is captured! This is Act 2.

In Act 3, Mario and Luigi destroy gateway to our reality, and chase Bowser through a complex castle of pipe portals in a cool action/chase sequence. In the end, Princess is rescued and Bowser defeated, but Mario, Luigi, and Dr. Toadah cannot go home because the portal machine is destroyed. But they don't mind, because they are heroes here and the Mushroom Kingdom is their new home now.

Well, that could work, but have you read the WHOLE timeline?

Yes, I know there was already an animated movie ITTL.
Of course, but I’ll use your idea for a Mario movie as the basis for Journey to Dinohatten. (Late reply, of course.)

In case you’re wondering about the TL, I still have some ideas for it, it’s just that I have writer’s block.
