O'Conner not captured 1941

Slightly cliché, but O'Connor as commander of 8th Army, with a further career upwards, eventually leading to him as commander 21st Army Group?

What would have been the effects of General O'Conner not being captured in April 1941?

Unless he can do something with Operation Battle Axe then he will fall foul of Churchill. It would also depend on his relationship with Auchinleck if he replaces Wavell as OTL.

We didn't get the chance to see how he would have performed against Rommel because he got himself captured!

You forget his driver got lost, and ROmmel nearly got captured on that same night.:D

"So we know O'Connor has problems appointing men to do simple tasks."

I wouldn't call it that simple a task. It wasn't like they took the wrong lane on a well posted highway. Visiting the front lines wasn't a risk-free business.

More than a few generals & marshals got nailed inspecting the "death zone" on the battlefield. The US had brigadier gen. Varnum shot down over Gemany. He flew against direct orders as he complete knowledge of the British ULTRA system & the role the Enigma decrypts played. McNair while commander of Army Ground Forces was wounded in Tunisia - visiting the front lines against a direct order. Bruckner was killed by Japanese fire on Okinawa, where inspecting the battle zone was definitely part of his job.

My thought is unless Connor pulls one out of his a..s & swiftly halts the German offensive he is not long for command of 8th Army. Churchill disliked losing generals.
