Oceania, Eurasia, Eastasia...

Whilst waiting for Wil to get on with his fascinating thread.....

If the world really was divided three ways, each superpower perpetually at war with at least one of the others, sometimes two, is that situation stable as Orwell stated?

Eastasian strength based on the fecundity and industry of its population, Eurasia protected by its huge interior spaces and interior lines of communication and Oceania by its global disposition and ocean borders.

Was it possible for each to be literally unconquerable by any combination of the other two?

As part of their policy science is being destroyed, and insanity is encouraged. Eventually when the oil begins to run out, and the fighting becomes even more frenzied for the final reserves they'll lose the telescreens, and other technology that allows them to keep control and collapse.

And so the Proles will inherit the earth, tarnished and probably nuked to near oblivion in the regimes death-throws..

No, as Mr Stereo1 said they have the final border of available natural resources to contend with, especially as they are repressing science and technology. Admittedly, their demands are probably much lower than OTLs given the extensive lack of industrialization and consumer goods, but they do have higher wartime demands, and the inability to tap "difficult" reserves more than makes up for it.

@beer kaiser: I see that space-filling empires have been a problem for a long, long time...

On a side note, I'm glad that was not OTL. I think quarantining Germany, Italy and Japan is far too severe, and the fact these countries have not posed a continuing threat to the world proves it was un-necessary.

And for someone whose ideal view of a (pre-Second Coming) world involves small nation states and as much Balkanisation and decentralisation as possible (well, maybe), it would hardly be that welcome.

I dunno, I kind of want Jesus to return and reign over us and a new Earth. As long as we're truly following Christ, don't we not have anything to worry about? Shouldn't we want His return instead of trying to artificially push the Second Coming back?

I do love that map, though. It's an interesting look into one of the fifth-dimensional branches of our Universe.

And no, I see no problem being an M-Theorist and a Christian. :D

This is only one version of the map (there were more maps, Germany being proposed as part of Soviet Union on the last one).
For better or worse, this could lead to balkanisation of more states (and probably starting in Yugoslavian SSR, as it is the only one in Soviet sphere which was not split up between republics (like Czech SSR and Slovakian SSR)).
