Obama's senate career

What would have happened if Hillary(or another Dem) had won in 2008?? For simplicity sake, in TTL, Obama never becomes President at any point. Let's say the Dem ran a Presidency like Obama's but without as much racial resentment(OTL it led to an openly racist white male President being elected). I want to know how Obama could win Senate races and what he would do in the Senate

His first reelection race would be in 2010, a red wave year. Despite that he would narrowly win due to his massive popularity in Chicago, though the state total goes to him by just around two percentage points. In 2016, he would win reelection as well, that is if he declines a presidential run of his own. As for what he does in the senate, we can take a guess on the committees he was apart of in OTL. Senator Obama would focus mostly on environmentalism (becoming one of the vocal Democrats in regards to global warming prevention), healthcare expansion, education reform, foreign affairs, and veterans benefits. The right would still hate him but not to the extent in OTL due to a somewhat lower profile. He would still be very visible in the public eye though due to being the sole African-American senator, and thus speak of issues that the community cares about (another black senator probably wouldn't be elected until 2012).

I don't know how long he would stay. Harry Reid pushed him to the presidency because he knew Obama wasn't happy as a senator.

Obama would win re-election easily. Heck, the worst candidate in the world, Alexi Giannoulias [1] almost retained the Senate seat for the Democrats in OTL--and against a strong candidate, moderate Republican Mark Kirk, who would probably not have given up his House seat for a Senate race against Obama. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexi_Giannoulias And Pat Quinn managed to win the governor's race...

[1] 2010 was just the right year to be associated with Broadway Bank! :openedeyewink:
