Throughout much of the 2012 campaign Obama's approvals were down and he was neck and neck with Romney in the polls. It looked like Romney's election to lose and that he did: the former MA Governor made a series of gaffes about the "47%" and "binders full of women" that doomed his candidacy. Obama's approvals started to improve by the autumn, and he ultimately secured a second term by winning a handful of states by rather narrow margins. Had only 3% been swung toward Romney nationally, he would have defeated Obama with 305 electoral votes to 233. We've had plenty of threads discussing a Romney administration, but how would Obama's presidency be viewed historically if he lost to Romney in 2012?
